Husband and wife sharing something sweet on the wedding night

Question:

Assalamu Alaikoum, Dear Sir/Madam, I am InshaAllah getting married soon and i am looking for someone who can clarify on a matter. Actually i wish to know if it is a Sunnat of the Prophete (SAW) for the bridegroom and bride to share something sweet (e.g a date) after the Nikah ceremony or is this just a custom which has been followed from ancient time. In case it is in a Hadith please give me the reference. Thanking you, Allah Hafiz, Ms Jeetun

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have not come across a narration which proves that this act is required on the wedding night. However, if the husband eats something with his wife on this night, this is permissible as it brings the hearts together. Nonetheless, if this act is based on a wrong belief, it is forbidden to do it.

For more benefit on the rights between spouses, please refer to Fatwa 83157, and to Fatwa 82908 on the etiquettes of intercourse with one's wife.

Allaah Knows best.
