Fasting outside of Ramadan can be of two kinds: voluntary and obligatory fasting.

First: Voluntary fasting:
It is one of the acts of worship that expiate one's sinsaccording to the Hadeeth (narration) on the authority of Huthayfah, may Allah be pleased with him: "The afflictions caused for man by his wife, money and neighbor are expiated by his prayers, fasting and charity." It was also narrated on the authority of Abu Qataadah Al-Ansaari, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet , was asked about fasting the Day of ‘Arafah (9th of ThuI-Hijjah), whereupon he said: “It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year.” He was also asked about fasting the Day of ‘Aashooraa’ (10th of Muharram), whereupon he said: “It expiates the sins of the preceding year." [Muslim] In addition, Abu Sa‘eed Al Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, , said: "Anyone who fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will keep him away from Hell for a distance covered in seventy years."  [Al Bukhari and Muslim] Abu Umaamah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, , said: "Whoever fasts a day for the sake of Allah, Allah will place between him and Hell a trench like that between the heavens and the earth."[At-Tirmithi]
