Violence, which has largely subsided in Israel since the army reoccupied West Bank cities hit the walled Old City of Jerusalem when a Palestinian Resistance man opened fire after police guards tried to question him.

A shootout ensued in which a Palestinian passerby was killed and the attacker fled. A suspect was arrested later after a search.

Lieutenant-General Moshe Yaalon replaced Lieutenant-General Shaul Mofaz as chief of staff of the occupation army at a ceremony in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office.

Analysts said Yaalon, would continue the aggression line taken by his predecessor against the Palestinian intifadha, uprising against Israeli occupation.

JIHAD RESISTANCE LEADER KILLED BY OCCUPATION TROOPS NEAR JENIN

Curfews slapped on seven of the West Bank's eight cities now confine around 700,000 Palestinians to their homes, impairing Palestinian public services and stifling Palestinian commerce.

Palestinian sources said an Islamic Jihad Resistance leader, Mu'annar Qassin Daraghmeh, 22, was killed by Israeli occupation troops after they stopped his car near the West Bank city of Jenin.

The occupation army has meanwhile arrested more than 20 Palestinian activists.

The suspects were arrested near Ramallah.
