Those who advocate women’s work outside the home support their calls with the economic benefit of woman’s work outside the home and its effect on raising national productivity. They usually mock the societies, which they label as backward, where the woman remains in her home.
If we avoid accusations and disputes and use subjective research, we should first know how the European woman went out into the work field. What were the motives for her going outside her home to work? Then, we would discuss the economic benefit of a woman going outside her home to work in an office or a factory.
Historical background of woman’s work outside the home
Enlightened people in general and those who believe in the theory of the material explanation of history in particular know that the European woman went outside her home to work when the bourgeoisie and capitalist societies were formed and the then prevalent feudal economic system collapsed.
The collapse of the prevalent economic system at that time was a result of its corruption and tyranny because the feudal lord owned the land and whoever was on it. The establishment of strong ownership in the various European regions paved the way for this collapse. The aspects of dramatic shift started to appear when the steam engine was invented and the great industrial revolution took place. At that time thousands, or rather millions of villagers and farmers— who were subjugated and humiliated by their feudal masters— left for the big cities where the new factories which were searching for workers received them. Middlemen used to bring those farmers and villagers to the capitalists in return for a commission.
The escape of the villagers and farmers to factories was not a blessing. They went out of the frying pan of the unjust feudal system, into the fire of the greedy capitalist system which gave them very low wages in return for long working hours. Moreover, middlemen used to take a share from those low wages. Workers worked in terrible conditions as they amassed in places of abject poverty, poor ventilation and extreme filth. The wages given by the new masters did not meet even their basic needs of food. Fatal diseases spread among them especially pulmonary tuberculosis which claimed the lives of many of them. Also, the plague which spread in the form of an epidemic claimed many lives, and the number of its victims in Europe in the fourteenth century were more than twenty-five million. It spread again in the eighteenth century and its name aroused terror in European cities and they called it ‘Black Death’.
This was not all, as naïve villagers were separated from their families in the countryside and were unable to provide them with any means of livelihood or to bring them to the city to live with them in these extremely dirty and uninhabitable areas.
Women and children had to wait for the return of the father who went to the city to support them and provide them with a dignified, prosperous life. The father neither returned nor sent them money. The father was usually a victim of the deadly diseases, the modern machines or coal mines. If he escaped those destinies, he would still be captive to his poverty and had no choice but hard work in order to satisfy his hunger.
In the course of time, the women and children in the villages had to move to the cities searching for sustenance by any means and for any price.Again, they were received by the middlemen of the capitalists who pushed them to the furnace of the factories in return for less than a quarter of the man’s salary.
Also, prostitution became widespread due to several reasons:
First: Abject poverty and the extreme deprivation of families which left the countryside and had no breadwinner.
Second: Thousands, or rather millions of workers, stayed in the cities without their wives and they had to respond to the call of their sexual instinct. If they could not fulfill their sexual need through marriage, they fulfilled it through prostitution.
Third: The presence of the middlemen who benefited from this profitable trade.
The capitalists greatly benefited from the woman going out to work. They were able to face the gatherings of workers who demanded equity and increased wages. They exploited the women and children who headed for the labor market and compelled them to work in return for the lowest wages. Women mostly used to work in return for one fourth of the wage of men. Even in our time which is called the age of "liberation", the woman still accepts half the wage of the man in spite of the frequent calls demanding equality between man and woman.
Exploitation of women and children moved the humane feelings of a group of thinkers and men of literature leading to the formation of a humanitarian movement which did its best through its social gravity to stop the capitalists’ exploitation of the working class and especially stopping the exploitation of children. There were eminent writers among the key figures of this intellectual school of thought; such as Charles Dickens. He exposed, in his masterpiece novel, David Copperfield the ugliness of the capitalist system which exploited children to work in factories in return for a symbolic wage.
This movement was met with sympathy from various sectors of society and managed to impose laws which banned child labor.
Then, no one remained in the arena except the woman whose blood was sucked by the capitalists after the collapse of the family system in which the woman enjoyed protection and care from her husband in spite of the injustice that affected the whole family by the feudal masters.
Because of the collapse of the family system, a man remaining without a wife or children, a woman going outside the home to work to earn her living and remaining without a husband or children and her inability to form a new family due to abject poverty and terrible social breakdown, the natural sexual desires of the man and woman faced extreme suppression at first, especially because religious beliefs were still firm among the common people at that time.
Jewish philosophers and theorizers solved this problem and deemed sexual relations outside the bond of marriage to be an approved, or rather a recommended thing, because it removes suppression and psychological complexes. In order to achieve this goal, a great intellectual revolution began. It was supported by thousands of writers, men of literature and artists who hailed the descent to the abyss of vice. Thousands of novels were composed and thousands of plays and TV series were created to encourage men and women to fornicate. They considered this practice to be heroic -- especially those women who presented themselves to the soldiers to satisfy their sexual desires for free during war time. Parties were held to honor those women that were attended by the presidents of countries and statues were built in memory of those women.
Since the woman went outside her home to work in Europe, she has been swirling in a horrible whirlpool to earn a living. The pretty women among them are drawn into the trade of white slavery, which is considered one of the most organized professions. Ferdinand Dreyfus, a French member of parliament, said that the profession of prostitution was no longer a personal profession. Rather, it had become a wide trade and an organized profession due to the profits made by its agencies. Mr. Paul Bureau said that practicing the profession of prostitution has become in our time a well-organized system by hired officials and workers. Writers, publishers, public speakers, lecturers, physicians, mid-wives and tourist companies all serve this trade and are involved in it. The new arts of publishing, presentation and advertisements are used to serve it.
Consequently, the trade of sex, films, stories, alcohol and drugs has become widespread and generates billions for the wicked minds who run these entire armies with an unequalled cunning that, usually, only the Jews are capable of. From these defiled circles, the far-reaching influence of the Jews grows to include statesmen, intellectuals and media figures. Accordingly, they dominate public beliefs and thoughts. The words of Bebel, the German Democratic Party leader, confirm what we said, “Are not man and woman but a kind of animal? Is there any kind of marriage between animal couples? What, then, about eternal marriage?”
Dr. Drysdale said, “The unrestricted relation without the restriction of marriage is an aspect of high morals because it is nearer to the laws of natural disposition; it directly forms from emotions, feelings and pure love; and the longing from which this relation is born is highly valued in ethics.” He also said that there is a dire need to take measures that make love without the restriction of marriage something that is respected and honored. It is pleasing that divorce is easy at this time but it still gradually veers people away from marriage.
Paul Robin, a French leader, said, ”One of the real gains that we achieved in our endeavors for the last quarter of a century is that an illegitimate child now has the same status of legitimate children. After that, all our children should be only of the first category in order to avoid comparison between these two kinds of children.”
