ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - U.S. warplanes launched a bombing raid on Thursday night on a former Taliban stronghold near the Pakistan border, the Afghan Islamic Press reported.
It said witnesses in the Pakistan town of Miramshah saw and heard warplanes attacking Zhawar, across the border in Afghanistan's Paktia province.
The United States attacked the same area after the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, when Washington retaliated against what it said were hideouts of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.
Bin Laden, wanted as prime suspect for the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, is still being sought as the U.S.-led coalition mops up the remaining Taliban and al Qaeda forces who have so far evaded capture or surrender
