Alistair Campbell, the British government's communications director, has resigned. Campbell was a key witness in the inquiry into events leading to the apparent suicide of government scientist Dr. David Kelly. Kelly was named as the source of a BBC report alleging that Campbell exaggerated the intelligence evidence on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to help justify the war. Last Tuesday, Campbell told the Hutton inquiry he had wanted the intelligence dossier's language toned down. He had previously launched a robust defence of the government and a stinging attack on the BBC at a parliamentary hearing. Campbell said in a statement he had agreed with prime minister Tony Blair in April that he would quit sometime this summer. A former journalist, Alistair Campbell was a key figure in Tony Blair'smomentous victory in the 1997 elections after 18 years of Conservative rule. Blair has called him an "able, fearless, loyal servant of the cause." **PHOTO CAPTION*** Alistair Campbell, Labour party Director of Communications, leaves Downing Street, London, August 29, 2003.
