An Israeli man, 28, and a baby were shot dead and two others wounded when a Palestinian gunman infiltrated a Jewish settlement in the southern West Bank shortly after the start of the Jewish New Year last evening, Israeli sources said.
"We have reports of two killed, an Israeli man aged 30 and a baby," Yerucham Mandola, a spokesman for the Magen David Adom emergency services said.
Two other people were lightly wounded in the incident when the gunman broke into a house in the Negohot settlement, some 10km southwest of Hebron, he said. They added that the gunman was shot dead by troops in the area a short time later and soldiers were hunting for a second man suspected of involvement in the attack.
The attack occurred shortly after the beginning of Rosh Hashanah Jewish New Year at sundown.
The latest attacks came as Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat vowed to fight to the death if Israel attempts to expel him from his battered headuarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah, in an interview published yesterday by a Saudi weekly.
"I swear before God that I will fight with this revolver I have here until I die as a martyr. I will not leave my homeland living or dead," the veteran Palestinian leader told the London-based Al Majallah from the headquarters where he has been cooped up by the Israeli army for about 20 months. On September 11, the Israeli security cabinet approved in principle to "remove" Arafat from Ramallah, deeming him an absolute obstacle to peace. The Israeli decision to expel Arafat sparked widespread international condemnation.
