Trade union members provided a noisy background to the first full day of the annual conference of Britain's ruling Labour party.
They were angry that a motion to discuss Iraq during the coming week was defeated. It has saved Prime Minister Tony Blair from a rancorous and potentially damaging debate.
Finance Minister Gordon Brown defended Blair over the war but focused on the economy and the euro. The conference has opened amid the lowest ever poll ratings for the Prime Minister, and his handling of the war in Iraq is the principal cause.
In an interview at the weekend he said he had nothing to apologize for. He also denied there was an agreement to let Brown lead the party into the next general election.
