An 19-year-old Palestinian civilian, Zaki Al-Shareef, was killed Saturday by Israeli occupation forces in Rafah. He was the eighth victim of a massive Israeli raid, which started Friday, in this Southern Gaza Strip city.
Eyewitnesses and Palestinian security sources said that 20 Palestinian homes in the neighborhoods of Al Barazil, Tel Al Sultan and Yebna refugee camp were completely destroyed early Saturday morning by the Israeli occupying forces, using either explosive charges or large D-9 bulldozers.
On Friday, seven Palestinians, including two children, were killed in Rafah and more than 64 others were wounded, most of whom critically.
Dr. Ali Mousa, director of Rafah's small Najar Hospital, said women and children were among the wounded.
Mousa said his hospital, with a maximum capacity of 50 beds, was overwhelmed by the casualties. Many of the wounded required surgery, but he said he had only one operating room and not enough medicine. Normally, serious cases are sent to hospitals in other towns, but those patients could not be transferred because of strict Israeli travel restrictions, he said.
Israeli military sources have said that the incursion will last for several days, in order to search arms-smuggling tunnels.
Meanwhile, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat held closed-door meetings with his prime minister and officials from his Fatah faction on Saturday to try to resolve a political dispute over a new Cabinet.
Following the meeting, a senior Arafat aide said his boss and the newly-appointed prime minister Ahmed Qorei have managed to resolve their differences, with Qorei agreeing to head up an emergency government until the end of October.
"The prime minister and his cabinet who were sworn in by Arafat, will continue their mission until the end of the month according to Palestinian law ... following agreement between Arafat and Abu Ala (Qorei)," Nabil Abu Rudeina said, according to AFP.
The powers of the emergency cabinet would be "effective immediately", he added.
