US Troops Kill Iraqi Civilian as American Soldier Dies of Wounds

US soldiers killed one Iraqi and wounded six others on Sunday when the Americans opened fire after a roadside bomb went off near a US patrol in the capital, a survivor and hospital officials said. The explosion missed the convoy as it drove through a western neighborhood of Baghdad at about 8:30 a.m. and caused no injuries, witnesses said. The soldiers opened fire, hitting three cars. One slain Iraqi and six wounded were brought to nearby Al-Nur hospital, officials there said. "I was driving near the US convoy when I heard an explosion. Then the US soldiers randomly opened fire," said Kadhum Salih, a teacher who was wounded in the left hand. Meanwhile, about a half-mile away, gunmen opened fire also Sunday on a US convoy on a Baghdad highway, setting one vehicle on fire. Witnesses said three foreigners were injured. The convoy of a military Humvee and two sport utility vehicles, the sort used by American civilians and officials in Iraq was on a highway in western Baghdad when the gunmen attacked, hitting one of the SUVs. Witnesses, cited by The AP said they heard gunfire and afterward saw US soldiers pulling three wounded people from the stricken vehicle. The SUV was seen still burning later, its hood pockmarked with bullet holes. Elsewhere, an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper died of injuries suffered when his vehicle rolled over near Baghdad, the US military said Sunday.
