Voting ended in Sri Lanka's parliamentary elections with an estimated 75 percent of the 12.89 million electorate turning out despite fears of violence, election officials said.
The two main contenders, President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Freedom Alliance and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party, said they were generally satisfied with the conduct of Friday's election.
Election officials said the final turnout figures were yet to be worked out, but initial reports from the provinces suggested about 75 percent of the electorate had cast ballots, maintaining the island's reputation for high voting.
The Freedom Alliance said there were a few incidents of intimidation, but the election had been mostly peaceful.
"Generally the poll was all right," Freedom Alliance secretary Susil Premajayantha told AFP. "I went to almost evey polling booth in my constituency of Kaduwela and there were no incidents."
The premier's party also said the election had been one of the most peaceful in recent times.
The first results are expected to start coming in by midnight (1800 GMT), but the final party positions are not expected to be known before midday (0700 GMT) Saturday.
