US Soldier, Six Iraqis Killed in Tikrit as Two Russians Shot Dead in Attack near Baghdad

A road accident south of Tikrit killed a U.S. soldier and injured two, the military said Wednesday. The accident took place Tuesday night some 10 kilometers south of Tikrit. The injured were being treated at a nearby medical facility and in stable condition, according to the military. No further details were released. Also in Tikrit, US forces killed six Iraqis during fighting, the military sources said Wednesday. Elsewhere, U.S. tanks backed by helicopter gunships have pounded Shi'ite fighters holed up in a cemetery in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf, witnesses told Reuters. Hospital officials claimed at least four people were killed. Some 30 persons were wounded in Wednesday's pre-dawn attack, the hospital officials added. **Two Russians shot dead in attack near Baghdad*** A group of energy experts from the Russian company Interenergoservis came under attack near Baghdad. Two were killed and six wounded, the company's executive director Alexander Rybinsky told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko has confirmed the killing of the two Russian citizens in Iraq. He told a news briefing that unknown attackers early on Wednesday shot at a bus carrying a group of Russian specialists working under contracts with Interenergoservis at the restoration of the electric station Dora near Baghdad. He said five Russians were injured.
