The first to collect the Quran under one manuscript Fatwa No: 101411
- Fatwa Date:18-11-2007
Assalaamualaykum, could you please inform me who was the first person to collect the Qur'an? Perhaps one of the 2 hadiths below are weak? It is reported ... from Ali who said: "May the mercy of Allah be upon Abu Bakr, the foremost of men to be rewarded with the collection of the manuscripts, for he was the first to collect (the text) between (two) covers". (Ibn Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Masahif) It is reported ... from Ibn Buraidah who said: "The first of those to collect the Qur'an into a mushaf (codex) was Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifah". (as-Suyuti, Al-Itqan fii Ulum al-Qur'an) I hope that the sources are genuine. Jazaaakallah
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The first person to collect the Quran is Abu Bakr . For more benefit in this regard, please refer to Fatwa 83643.
As regards the narration on the authority of 'Ali it is reported by Abu Al-Qaasim, Ash-Shaafi'i and it is mentioned in the book authored by Ibn 'Abdul Barr. As-Suyooti stated that it is authentic.
With regard to the narration by Saalim, the servant of Abu Haneefah As-Sayooti, classified it as weak.
Allaah Knows best.
