Men wearing gold-plated magnet bracelets for medical purposes Fatwa No: 131726
- Fatwa Date:28-1-2010
selamaleikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh , My question is about man wearing Gold : i know tht it is prohibited for man to wear gold jewelry but I just want to know what is the Fatwa regarding man wearing gold or gold plated magnet bracelet or ring on his knees and elbows, hoping for natural healing medical benefits, and all will be 100% covered with clothing at all times from plain view? thank you in advance for your help in this matter.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The scholars differed in opinion about a man wearing gold-plated items and we clarified the most preponderant opinion in details in Fatwa 89406 that it is permissible to use it if the plating is very slight to an extent that if it is exposed to fire, nothing will remain of it, otherwise it is not permissible.
As regards being treated with such magnet bracelets; if it is confirmed that it is beneficial with scientific experiments and not with just illusions, then the matter is as mentioned that there is a difference of opinion about it. However, if the issue has a connection with magic and superstition, then it is an obligation to avoid it. Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked about the use of some magnet bracelets for treatment and he answered: “There is no doubt that wearing such magnet bracelets is similar to what the people used to do in the Pre-Islamic era of ignorance, as it is either among the forbidden polytheistic matters or among its means, so the least that can be said about it is that it is a doubtful matter.”
Moreover, Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: “The means which Allaah made as a reason for curing diseases are of two kinds:
- Religious means: like the Quran and supplicating.
- Perceptible means: like material medicines known in the Sharee’ah, like honey, or through experiments such as many of these available medicines. However, the effect of this kind should be through direct contact and not through illusion and imagination. If its effect is proven through direct perceptible manner, then it is acceptable to take it as a medicine that brings cure with the Will of Allaah.
However, if it is just an illusion or an imagination by which the patient gains psychological comfort based on that illusion and imagination, and subsequently the disease minimizes for him and he may gain inner happiness and the disease disappears, then it is not permissible to rely on this and it is not permissible to confirm it to be as a medicine."
Allaah Knows best.
