A woman wearing socks during Ihraam Fatwa No: 152975
- Fatwa Date:29-3-2011
assalamu alaikum, my question is whether women can wear soaks or cover her feet after entering to ihram for umrah??
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is permissible for a woman in the state of Ihraam to cover her feet and wear socks, and if she is in the presence of non-Mahram men, she is obliged to cover her feet. Indeed, it is forbidden for her to uncover her feet in front of non-Mahram men during Hajj or in other situation. When Umm Salamah asked “What should women do with the hems of their garments?” The Prophet said: "Let them lower it a span of the hand". She said: “This means that their feet will be exposed”. The Prophet said: "Let them lower it a forearm and not exceed that." [At-Tirmithi who said that this Hadeeth is Hasan Saheeh (i.e. good or sound)]
However, a woman in the state of Ihraam may wear whatever clothes she wishes but she does not wear gloves or Niqaab (face covering). Al-Buhooti from the Hanbali School said: “The Ihraam of a woman is like the Ihraam of a man with the exception of wearing clothes, and that she should avoid wearing a veil (face covering), gloves, or covering her face, but she is allowed to wear jewelry….” For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 81841.
Allaah Knows best.
