All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Whether your mother-in-law is content or discontent has nothing to do with the acceptance of Hajj. Rather, to perform the obligatory Hajj, it is not a condition to have the permission of the husband, let alone the permission of other people, as we have already clarified in Fataawa 115912 and 126203.
For an act of worship to be accepted – including Hajj – there are two conditions: first, sincerity to Allaah, and second, it should be in accordance with the Sharee'ah. Allaah says (what means): {So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.”} [Quran 18:110]
Allaah also says (what means): {[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed — and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.} [Quran 67:2]
Al-Fudhayl ibn ‘Iyaadh interpreted ‘best in deed’, saying: “That which is most sincere and most correct.” He was asked: “What does it mean most sincere and most correct?” He said: “If the deed is sincere and it was not correct, it is not accepted, and if it was correct and not sincere, it is also not accepted until it is sincere and correct: sincere is what was done only for the sake of Allaah, and correct is that which is done in accordance with the Sunnah.”
We advise your mother-in-law to take care of your children in your absence if she can do so, perhaps Allaah will give her the reward of Hajj as well; an authentic Hadeeth reads: “He who equips a fighter in the cause of Allaah is as if he has taken part in Jihaad himself; and he who looks after the dependants of a fighter (in the cause of Allaah) in his absence, is as if he has taken part in the fighting himself.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] The meaning of this Hadeeth is that he gets the same reward like him even if he does not actually participate in battle. The same thing applies to those who look after the children of someone who goes for Hajj: it is hoped that Allaah will write the reward of Hajj for them as well.
Ibn Battaal said in his interpretation of Saheeh Al-Bukhari: “The Fiqh that we get from this Hadeeth is that anyone who helps a believer in doing good, will get the same reward as the one who actually does the good himself. The Prophet informed us that whoever equips a fighter in the cause of Allaah, he has indeed participated in the fighting. Also, whoever feeds a fasting person or helps him to be strong enough to fast will get the same reward, and also whoever helps a person who goes for Hajj or ‘Umrah with something that better enables him to perform his Hajj or ‘Umrah and thus carry out those acts in a complete form, then he gets the same reward like him.”
Allaah Knows best.
