Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.

It is the specialist doctors who can answer this question as they are 'the people of the message' as far as your question is concerned. The 'people of the message' are the specialists in every discipline. Allaah says (what means): {...So ask the people of the message if you do not know.}[Quran 16:43] Ibn ‘Atiyyah said: “'The people of the message' is a general term, and it applies to anyone who can be referred to for knowledge.” [End of quote]

The scholars [of Islam] spoke about ripe and fresh dates and their benefit for woman. Ibn Al-Jawzi said in Zaad Al-Maseer: “The Salaf (righteous predecessors) recommended ripe fresh dates for women during their postpartum bleeding, according to the story of Maryam (Mary), may Allaah exalt her mention (in the Quran).” [End of quote]

As-Suyooti mentioned some of these traditional reports of the Salaf in Ad-Durr Al-Manthoor, among which is the saying of Shaqeeq: “If Allaah had known that there were anything better for women during postpartum bleeding than fresh dates, He would have commanded Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, to eat it.” Also, ‘Amr ibn Maymoon, said: “There is nothing better for women during labor than ripe or fresh dates, as Allaah says (what means): {And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.}[Quran 19:25] Moreover, Ar-Rabee’ ibn Khaytham, said: “In my view, there is no better cure for the women during postpartum bleeding than ripe dates, and there is no better cure for a sick person than honey.” [End of quote]

From a scientific point of view, the Encyclopedia of Scientific Miracles in the Quran and the Sunnah mentioned some wisdom about this, among which are the following:

1 - The fruit of a date palm tree – i.e. ripe dates – contains a styptic (astringent) agent that helps strengthen the muscles of the uterus, so it helps in giving birth to the baby and it reduces the amount of bleeding after childbirth.

2 - It contains a high proportion of sugar that is easily and quickly digested, and it is a primary source of energy, a favorite food for the muscles.

3 - It lowers blood pressure in a pregnant woman for a short period and then it goes back to normal so as to reduce the amount of bleeding.

4 - It is a soft substance and it is known that botanic laxatives are useful for facilitating birth as it cleans the large intestines.
