It is not Kufr to watch movies containing Kufr, but it is sinful Fatwa No: 275956
- Fatwa Date:14-12-2014
Assalamu alaikum. Is it kufr to watch and enjoy movies or tv series that have kufr in them? I used to enjoy watching films/movies/tv series that have magic, power or ability to travel back in time, or concept of the future, or greek mythology, aliens, intergalactic travels, and the like..I enjoyed watching them I don't believe them. What I believe is what is to be believed in Islam. For me they're just movies. But I enjoyed watching them. Have I become a kafir? Is it kufr to imagine impossible things like going back in time, flying, having power? Just imagining that I can do these. Is it kufr?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Kufr is not such an easy matter that a person is deemed an unbeliever for any minor reason. If someone is an unbeliever, he exits the fold of Islam. This has a number of legal consequences, such as him not being washed and enshrouded after death, not praying the funeral prayer for him and not burying him in the graves of Muslims, and other rulings. Therefore, the scholars set stringent conditions for declaring someone an unbeliever. Please refer to Fataawa 8106 and 87963.
A Muslim is not considered an unbeliever just because of watching films that contain matters of Kufr, but this does not mean that it is permissible for a Muslim to watch them, as watching them involves many risks which we have already discussed in Fatwa 89099. Also, for more benefit, refer to Fatwa 256084.
Also, it is not Kufr to imagine what you mentioned such as going back in time, flying or having power. But such imagining is a waste of time and a trivial thing which a Muslim should not be preoccupied with. His life is more important than to be wasted on such matters. Al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Allaah likes noble matters and dislikes what is trivial ones." [At-Tabaraani - Al-Albaani graded it Saheeh (sound)]
Allaah Knows best.
