Reason for the expulsion of Satan from Paradise Fatwa No: 30692
- Fatwa Date:28-2-2011
What is the reason behind the expulsion of Iblees (Satan) from Paradise? I know that his haughtiness, arrogance, disobedience to the order of Allaah and envy are some, but is there another reason that is mentioned in Soorat Al-An’aam (of the Quran)?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Allaah the Almighty expelled Iblees from Paradise because he disobeyed Him. He was too haughty to prostrate himself to Aadam (Adam) and he considered himself better than Aadam in terms of the substance of creation. Allaah the Almighty Says (what means): {[Allaah] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."} [Quran 7:12]
Iblees thought that fire is better than clay because of its power to burn and destroy. The comparison is not in his favor, as he thought, because fire’s indifference and recklessness are sufficient to make clay preferable to it, since it is characterized by calmness and general benefit. If fire was better than clay, according to Iblees’ claim, then still he had no authority to hold some creatures of Allaah better than others. Allaah the Almighty Says (what means): {And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allaah and high above what they associate with Him.} [Quran 28: 68].
Please note that we did not find in Chapter Al-An‘aam any mention of why Iblees was expelled from the mercy of Allaah. Perhaps it was an error or misconception on your part.
Allaah Knows best.
