Meaning of hadeeth about people of Maghrib Fatwa No: 339829
- Fatwa Date:16-11-2016
Is the following hadith authentic?
There will always be a part of my Community firm before the truth in the West (the Maghreb) until the order comes from Allaah.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We have not come across a hadeeth with the exact wording mentioned in the question, but there is an authentic hadeeth that was reported by Abu ‘Awaanah in his Mustakhraj 'ala Saheeh Muslim and narrated by Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said that the Messenger of Allah said, “The people of the Maghrib will remain firm upon the truth until the Hour comes.”
Imaam Muslim reported it in his Saheeh with the wording: “The people of Al-Gharb (the West) will remain firm upon the truth until the Hour comes.”
The narration reported by Ad-Daaraqutni reads, “A group of my nation will remain firm upon the truth in the Maghrib until the Hour comes.”
The scholars differed in opinion about what is intended by the Maghrib in the hadeeth; Al-Qurtubi, in his book Al-Mufhim, was inclined to the view that, "It meant the people of the West of the earth, but the beginning of the west with relation to Madeenah (the city of the Prophet ) is Ash-Shaam (the Levant/Greater Syria), and its end is where the earth ends in the Far West, and what is between them, all of this is called the Maghrib, or the West.”
Allah knows best.
