Carrying perfumed shampoo while in Ihraam Fatwa No: 341275
- Fatwa Date:9-1-2017
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu. Can I carry perfumed shampoo and oils and such in a bag with me while I am in Ihraam (ritual state of consecration) while doing 'Umrah in Masjid Al Haraam? May Allaah reward you.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
If the bottle of perfumed shampoo is tightly closed and there is no scent coming out of it, then putting it in the bag does not necessitate a ransom while you are in a state of Ihraam for Hajj or ‘Umrah.
Sharh Al-Kharashi ‘ala Mukhtasar Khaleel reads, “If a person in the state of Ihraam carries a flask or a skin container and the like that is very tightly closed in a way that no smell comes out of it, then he does not have to offer a ransom, as it does not have any smell in this case.”
However, it is better not to carry it; Al-Hattaab from the Maaliki School of jurisprudence said, “It means that if someone carries a flask with a closed cap while he is in a state of Ihraam, then he does not have to offer a ransom... but he is wrong in carrying it.”
Nonetheless, some scholars believe that there is nothing wrong with carrying it, even if the smell comes out of it. Mughni Al-Muhtaaj reads, “If he carries musk or the like in a folded cloth or a musk container that is not cracked, then this does not harm even if he smells it, as there is a barrier (between him and it)…”
Allah knows best.
