Depicting Muslim Imaams in movies
Fatwa No: 341293

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I know from a fatwa on Islamweb that depicting Companions in movies is haram. So what about Islamic personalities or historical figures like Imam Abu haneefah or Omar Mukhtar?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The scholars forbade depicting the role of prominent Imaams in order to prevent degrading them and debasing their status in the eyes of those who watch such depiction. No matter how brilliant the actor might be, he might still be unable to depict the great image of the Imaam, and his deficient depiction might become imprinted in the hearts of the members of this nation.

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen, when speaking about the terms and conditions of acting, said, “Secondly: that he does not depict someone who is entitled to be respected, such as the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and the Imaams of the Muslims (the leading scholars) and the like.
