Samson and Delilah not mentioned in Quran and Sunnah Fatwa No: 347941
- Fatwa Date:8-7-2017
Is there any Quranic verse or hadith regarding Samson and Delilah?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
There is no mention of Samson in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah according to our knowledge. However, Samson was mentioned in Ibn Abi Haatim's Tafseer (exegesis), quoting Mujaahid as a Mursal report (a report narrated on the authority of some of the Taabi'oon [the generation that followed the Companions]). It reads:
"The Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, made mention of a man from the Children of Israel who wore armor and strove in the way of Allah for one thousand months. The Muslims were amazed at that, so Allah, The Exalted, revealed the following verses (which mean): {Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months...} [Quran 97:1-3] during which that man wore armor in the way of Allah." Ath-Tha‘labi in his Tafseer, and Al-‘Ayni in ‘Umdat Al-Qaari, mentioned that the name of that man was Samson."
Allah knows best.
