Who gave Sawdah in marriage to Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam Fatwa No: 351310
- Fatwa Date:7-9-2017
Sawdah was a believer, and yet she had Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, ask her father, who was a polytheist, if he could marry her. I thought the disbelievers did not have any say in that, but maybe this was done just to keep the peace... Was it muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, who went to talk to her father? And why did he have to consult with a disbelieving father?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
What we came across in the books of biography is that he asked her father for her hand in marriage through Khawlah bint Hakeem, the wife of ‘Uthmaan ibn Math’oon. We did not find who actually married her off.
If her non-Muslim father was her guardian in this marriage, then there is no problem with that because that was at the beginning of Islam, before the rulings of the Shariah were established.
Sawdah, may Allah be pleased with her, was the first woman whom the Prophet married after the death of Khadeejah, may Allah be pleased with her.
Allah knows best.
