Fatwa No: 360409

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. Is the following hadith authentic?
‘Abdullaah Ibn Mas‘ood narrated that the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, "(The person in the lowest level in Paradise) will go forward until the palace is opened for him. He will be in a hollow pearl, and the roofs, doors, locks, and keys will also be made from pearl. This palace will face a (large) green jewel will red lining in which there will be 70 doors. Every door will lead to another green jewel with an inner lining. Every jewel will lead to another jewel with a different colour. In every jewel, there will be thrones, wives, and female slaves. The lowest wife from amongst his wives will be a houri with large and lovely eyes. She will be wearing 70 layers of clothes through which the marrow of her leg can be seen. Her inside will be a reflection of him, and his inside will be a reflection of her. (There will be complete harmony between them and their hearts will be united in love.) When he turns away from her, she will appear 70 times more beautiful to him. It will be said to him, 'Look' and he will look . Then it will be said to him, 'Your kingdom is the distance of one hundred years which the eye can see.'"
Ibn Mas‘ood says that ‘Umar said, "O Ka‘b, did you not listen to what Ibn Mas‘ood said regarding the lowest level of Paradise? (If the lowest level is such) then how will the highest level of Paradise be?" Ka‘b answered, "That which no eye has seen and no ear has heard. I have heard that Allah has created a house and placed as many wives, fruits, and drinks as He willed in it. Then he sealed it shut so no one can see it; not even the angels." [Ibn Abi Ad-Dunyaa, At-Tabaraani, Al-Haakim]

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The hadeeth in reference was classified as saheeh (sound) by Al-Albaani in his book Saheeh Al-Jaamiʻ, no. 3704. He commented on it, saying:

"It was cited by Ibn Abi Ad-Dunyaa, At-Tabaraani, and Al-Haakim as a Marfooʻ hadeeth (directly attributed to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) narrated on the authority of Ibn Masʻood. The last part from the statement: 'Allah, the Exalted, has created a house therein' until the end of the hadeeth was classified as a Mawqoof report (stopped at the level of the Companion) on the authority of Kaʻb. One of the versions narrated on the authority of At-Tabaraani is saheeh, and this wording was cited by him. Al-Haakim remarked that the Isnaad (chain of narration) is saheeh. A similar, yet more brief, wording was cited in Saheeh Muslim on the authority of Ibn Masʻood."

Al-Haythami commented on the hadeeth, saying, "The whole hadeeth was narrated by At-Tabaraani with different chains of narration, the reporters of one of these chains of narration were approved by Al-Bukhaari, except for Abu Khaalid Ad-Daalaani, who was classified as a trustworthy reporter by scholars of Hadeeth." [Majmaʻ Az-Zawaa’id]

Allah knows best.
