Eating Vark Sweets Fatwa No: 371467
- Fatwa Date:26-2-2018
Assalamu Alaikum In India, certain sweets are made with a thin silver foil on top of them. The silver is edible, though flavorless. It is made by pounding silver into sheets, a few micrometers (µm) thick, typically 0.2 µm-0.8 µm. It is fragile and breaks into smaller pieces if handled with direct skin contact. Those leaves in the 0.2 µm thickness tend to adhere to skin if handled directly. Is it allowed to eat these sweets?JazakAllaahu khayran katheeran
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We have not come across any statement of the early scholars about this issue, and Shaykh Al-Munajjid mentioned that he was asked the following question:
"What is the ruling of eating some kind of sweets that are offered in some countries such as India and others, which are called Vark sweets, whereby these sweets contain silver or gold, which is placed on sweets in the form of thin paper to decorate them, and this paper is edible?"
He replied: "Praise be to Allah; I asked this question to our Shaykh 'Abdur-Rahmaan Al-Barraak, may Allaah preserve him, and he said: 'There is nothing wrong with that as long as there is no extravagance or exaggeration, provided there is no harm in (eating) it.'" [End of quote]
Allah knows best.
