Satan Misleads the People through Music Fatwa No: 378139
- Fatwa Date:26-6-2018
Scholars, are there any sayings which say shaitan led our ancestors away with music or introduced music to people? I was told this and wanted to know if it was true?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The Quran indicates that one of the ways by which Satan misleads the children of Aadam is by his voice. Allah Says (what means): {And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion.} [Quran 17:64]
The meaning of ‘incite [to senselessness]’, is to deceive and lure everyone you can to do evil with your voice; meaning with the sounds of flute, songs and musical entertainments.
Mujaahid interpreted the saying of Allah {with your voice}, to mean singing and the use of musical instruments. Another view about the interpretation of his ‘your voice’ is that it refers to everything that leads to disobedience. Ibn Al-Qayyim said: "It is known that singing is one of the greatest reasons leading to sin, and it is for this reason that the voice of the devil is interpreted to mean singing." [End of quote]
Ibn Jareer At-Tabari said: "Every voice that is a call to him [the devil] and to his work and obedience, and it is contrary to the call to the obedience of Allah is included in the meaning of his voice, about which Allah Says (what means): {And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice.}" [End of quote]
Musical entertainments are a voice of the devil, by which he misleads the people from the straight path.
Ibn Al-Qayyim said in his book Ighaathat Al-Lahfaan: "Among the plots of the enemy of Allah (the devil) and his traps, with which he seeks to ensnare those who possess little knowledge, intellect and religiousness, and by which he trapped the hearts of the ignorant and the misguided ones, is the listening to whistling, clapping and singing accompanied by musical instruments. This diverts the hearts from the Quran and makes them devoted to immorality and disobedience, thus it is the ‘Quran’ of Satan, a thick barrier from the Most Beneficent. It also leads to sodomy and fornication and a means through which immoral people who are passionately in love fulfil their desires with upmost affliction, and a means used by Satan to trap the hearts of those who follow falsehood. He makes it appear attractive to them cunningly and deceptively, and he casts false doubts so that people regard it as something good. As a result, people accept his inspiration and desert the Quran because of it." [End of quote]
Allah knows best.
