Suffering from Depression Because of Not Achieving Goals Fatwa No: 393133
- Fatwa Date:5-3-2019
Selaam alaykum,I am a Muslim young male suffering from depression and stress. I have been suffering for a long time that I’m not even testing the sweetness of my life. Alhamdulillah I pray five times a day and stayed away from many temptations and haram things like women, alcohol etc.. and I make a lot of dua’s and prayers. After all I have seen a psychiatrist. But I am still suffering. The reason is I have had many dreams and expectations. But they didn’t come true and in the eyes of people I feel like I am a failure. Because everybody knew what I was doing and I feel my prestige is gone and I have no confidence at all. I see people working for their future and succeed. Even though they do haram things. But me, I feel like I am stuck. I don’t know what to do. I don’t feel comfortable because my dream is to achieve big things and help others. I don’t know what to do and in the city I live it is difficult to find someone who is righteous. What should I do ya sheikh?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We advise you to make to be focused and concentrate and make pleasing your Lord Almighty the main concern. You should strive hard to obey Him in all possible ways.
You should mention Him much and supplicate Him as much as you can, because this is one of the greatest means of comforting the heart and a making your soul tranquil.
You should not care people and how they judge you; rather, set your goals and try to achieve them. However, you should only set achievable goals, and should not exaggerate by setting unachievable goals, because not being able to fulfill them will upset and disappoint you. Rather, you should only long to achieve what is doable, and once you achieve it, then you can aspire to achieve another goal, and so on.
Continue to consult a trustworthy psychiatrist as long as you are in need of that, and by this you will be acting upon the advice of the Prophet who instructed us to seek treatment.
Allah knows best.
