Applying perfume before making the intention for assuming Ihram Fatwa No: 40023
- Fatwa Date:7-9-2015
What is the ruling on applying perfume after putting on the ihram (ritual consecration) clothes for ‘Umrah? What is the ruling when a pregnant woman gets tired and fails to complete the rituals of ‘Umrah?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
It is permissible to apply perfume to the body before making the intention of assuming ihram, whether before or after putting on ihram clothes. ‘Aa'ishah said: "I applied perfume to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, with my own hand before he entered the state of ihram and as he concluded it before performing tawaf (circumambulation) around the House." [Muslim]
When a pregnant woman feels tired during ‘Umrah, she can rest for a while and then proceed. In case her state of tiredness does not dissipate, she can perform tawaf and sa‘y (going back and forth between Mount Safa and Marwah) while riding. But it is impermissible for her to end her ihram for ‘Umrah because of being tired. Rather, she has to complete the rituals of ‘Umrah. In case she returns to her country, she remains in a state of ihram and is required to avoid all the restrictions of ihram until she is able to come back to Mecca to complete the rituals of ‘Umrah.
Allaah Knows best.
