Fasting Is Not Invalidated by Licking Lips or Swallowing Saliva Fatwa No: 437857
- Fatwa Date:3-3-2021
Assalmoalaikum previously when I was fasting, I would lick my lips because I could not stop my tongue and because I had moisture and sweat, I would also spit my saliva because I thought that there was remnants of food, toothpaste and leftover water from ablution, I licked the remaining saliva on my lips. Does this invalidate my fasts if I did these things more than once without meaning to and because I did this unitentionally?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Your fasting is not invalidated by what you were doing by licking your lips after spitting, or after the existence of saliva and the like. Rather, even if we assume that you have swallowed some moisture after unintentionally licking your lips, then your fast is not invalidated.
Ar-Rawdh Al-Murbi’ reads: "One’s fast is not invalidated by what entered his throat unintentionally."
We warn you against whispers, as they are a great evil; rather, you should ignore them and not pay any attention to them; this is the effective remedy for them.
For more benefit on whispers, please refer to Fatwa 374308.
Allah Knows best.
