Audio recitation of the Quran should be stopped during sexual intercourse Fatwa No: 52490
- Fatwa Date:12-1-2014
What is the Sharee‘ah ruling on having the Quran recited in the bedroom during intercourse? Noting that the radio is turned on throughout the day and night, not only during intercourse.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Reflection on the meanings and listening attentively are from the manners that one should observe when the Quran is recited. Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.} [Quran 7:204] Although the verse obliges attentive listening to the Quran in prayer, its wording is general at all times as held by scholars, though it is not an obligation. It is true that one can listen to the Quran in any case, but he should venerate the Sacred Ordinances of Allaah The Almighty and keep the Quran away from anything that may feature disrespect for it. In a Hadeeth, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “The one who listens to a verse from the Quran, his reward is doubled; and whoever recites it, it will be a light for him on the Day of Judgment.” [Ahmad]
Some of the righteous predecessors said that there is no one closer to the Mercy of Allaah than the one who listens to the Quran. This meaning is quoted from the aforementioned verse. Therefore, if you do not listen to the Quran, you should turn the radio off.
We do not find any text prohibiting listening to the Quran during intercourse, though the Sharee‘ah manners require the Muslim to attentively listen to it. If one was busy, he should turn the set off whether he is having intercourse or doing anything else.
Allaah Knows best.
