Du’aa’ During Burial of the Dead
Fatwa No: 84537

Question

I would like to know if during burial the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah is read at the head side of the buried and Aamana ar-Rasoolah at the leg side. Also please inform me if there is any collective Du'a anywhere during the burial.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

On the basis of our knowledge, it is not proved in the Prophetic Hadeeth that it is permissible to recite the beginning of Soorah Al-Baqarah at the head side of a dead person nor the last two verses of the same Soorah at the side of his legs.

Also, it is not proved that a special Du'aa’ (supplication) is to be said individually or collectively, after the burial.

Anyway, it is permissible to supplicate for the dead, to seek forgiveness for him, and to ask Allah to enable him to answer correctly the questions that each dead person is asked by the angels in the grave (i.e. who is your Lord?; What is your religion?; and ‘Who is this man who was sent among you?).

'Uthman Ibn Affaan narrated that the Prophet used to say after finishing the burial of the dead: “Seek Allah's Forgiveness for your brother and supplicate Allah to grant him steadfastness on the right answer, as he is being questioned now.” [Abu Daawood]

Therefore, whoever attends the burial of the dead, is strongly advised to supplicate for him. However, it is not proved that the Salaf (the righteous predecessors) used to supplicate in congregation for the dead. So, it is safer and better to avoid such an action.

Allah knows best.
