Giving a copy of the Qur'an to a non-Muslim
Fatwa No: 86207

Question

In 1996, when I was doing a course in USA, I gave a Tafsir book to a non-Muslim for study. I know probably he will not make Wudu before reading the Tafsir. Have I done any mistake for that? Do I need to give Kaffara (expiation) for that mistake?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. Giving Qur'an to a non-Muslim, if it does not contain the Arabic text only the translation then it is permissible, if it contains the Arabic text then it is not permissible because The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) prohibited traveling with Qur'an to non-Muslim countries . [Saheeh Muslim ] Therefore, if the questioner brother has given the Qur'an to non-Muslims he should take it back if he can; otherwise, he should repent and ask forgiveness from Allah, and he is not supposed to give any expiation for that. Allah knows best.
