Fatwa No: 86641

Question

If a person performs Hajj almost every year, what are the benefits? I am aware that it is necessary only once, and maybe Umrah every now and then. Relating to monkeys, is it true that they were human beings before they were turned into monkeys by Allah (SWT) and why?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Performing Hajj and ‘Umrah often results in expiation of sins and ease from difficulties of life. Al-Bukhaari and Muslim reported that the Prophet said: “From one ‘Umrah to the next is an atonement for any sins committed in between.

Imams Ahmad, An-Nasaa-i and At-Tirmithi reported that the Prophet said: “Follow the Hajj with an ‘Umrah (and continue doing so) as they eradicate poverty and sins as the bellows eradicate the scum of iron, gold and silver.

As for the origin of monkeys, the majority of scholars believe that they were created like all other species in the six days that are mentioned in the Quran. Allah Says (what means): {And indeed We created the heavens and the earth and all between them in six days.} [Quran 50:38]

Ibn Katheer interpreted this verse by saying: “Allah created the monkeys and pigs like all other creatures in the six days which he mentioned in His Book. It is true that some Israelis were turned into monkeys when they refused to abide by Allah's Orders and violated His Prohibitions by fishing on the Sabbath through cheating while Allah had prohibited them from doing so. So as a punishment, Allah turned them into monkeys. Allah Says (what means): {And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised."} [Quran 2:65]

Allah knows best.
