Expiation for the missed fast of the pregnant woman
Fatwa No: 86716

Question

If a sister was pregnant and her fasting in the month of Ramadan was limited due to her state and she was unable to make up the fast before the next Ramadan, she would have to provide food to one needy person. My question: Is it provided from her money (she doesn’t work for a living but has some money in a personal account) as it was her fast that wasn’t completed? Or is it from her husband’s money as he is considered the provider of the family?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

If this woman broke the fast fearing for her fetus or her suckling child, then she has to feed one poor person for each day she missed fasting and it is the husband or the guardian of the child [i.e. if the husabnd has died for instance] who should pay for that.  She is also obliged to make up for the days she missed the fast.

However, if she broke the fast fearing for herself, then she does not have to feed a poor person; rather, she is only obliged to make up the days she missed.

This is, of course, if she was not negligent in making up the fast until the next Ramadan came, however, if she was neglegent, she is obliged to make up the fast and feed a poor person for each day she broke the fast.

Allaah Knows best.
