Meaning of Qur'anic verse (Al-'Imran 3:112) Fatwa No: 88940
- Fatwa Date:30-11-2004
A verse in Surah Al-'Imran 3:112 says that the Jews will ever live in poverty and disgrace, but we find them rich and prosperous. What is the correct interpretation of the verse?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
A Muslim should believe that the Words of Allaah are the truth, and falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it as it is sent down by The Hakeem (the All-Wise) and The Hameed (Worthy of all praise). If someone imagines that there is a deficiency in the truth of the Qur'an, he has to know that this is due to his misunderstanding. The humiliation that the verse has mentioned is the truth and confirms the reality as Allaah says (interpretation of meaning): {They have been put under humiliation [by Allaah] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e. covenant] from Allaah and a rope [i.e. treaty] from the people.}[3:112]. This means at the exception of a covenant of protection from Allaah and a covenant of protection from the people. But by themselves, they are humiliated and are not victorious. This is the reality of the Jews today, we find that many non-Muslim nations help and support them and stand by their side; this is what takes away from them part of the humility and poverty. If these countries stop helping and supporting them; they will become poor and humiliated. So Allaah has spoken the truth saying (interpretation of meaning): {…except for a rope [i.e. covenant] from Allaah and a rope [i.e. treaty] from the people [i.e. Muslims].}[3:112].
Allaah knows best.
