Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The Prophetic narration which you referred to is authentic and is reported by At-Tirmithi in the chapter entitled ''The description of the Day of Judgement…'', and is also narrated by Imaams Ahmad, At-Tabaraani, Abu Ya'la and Al-Haakim .

The wording of At-Tirmithi, is as follows: Ibn ‘Abbaas said: 'One day, I was riding behind the Prophet when he said, "O boy! I will instruct you in some matters. Observe the rights of Allaah, He will protect you; observe His rights upon you, and you will find him before you. If you ask, ask of Allaah and if you seek assistance, seek it from Allaah. Know that if the whole world gathered together to benefit you, they could not do so except by that which Allaah has destined for you; and if they gathered together to harm you, they could not do so except by that which Allaah has destined for you. The pens have been raised and the sheets have dried” (Which means everything has already been predestined by Allaah).

The above narration is one of the greatest narrations which cultivates a person and engraves in his heart to have trust and completely rely on Allaah and avoid relying on any of His creatures.

In light of the above narration, we, as Muslims, are required to do the following:

1-     To observe the rights of Allaah, this is by observing His Ordainments and Law, obey Him and refrain from committing sins. If we observe the rights of Allaah, Allaah will protect us as a result.

2-     To ask Allaah Alone, "If you ask, ask of Allaah", and not ask anyone else. The supplication is one of the greatest acts of worship, and the Prophet said: "Supplicating is (the essence of) worship." [At-Tirmithi]

3-     To seek the help of Allaah Alone in order to achieve a benefit or repel harm, as the Dominion of the universe is in The Hand of Allaah. All other than Allaah, whom one may think are able to benefit or repel harm are within Allaah's Dominion, and they can not do anything except with the Will of Allaah.

4-     To believe in Allaah's Decree and Predestination. None of the creation of Allaah can delay or expedite anything, other than what Allaah has already predestined. Whatever Allaah has predestined will come to pass and none of the creation will be able to prevent it. On the other hand, what Allaah has not predestined to happen, will not happen even if the whole creation get together to achieve it. Since this is the case, a person's heart should be attached to Allaah, and he should know that whatever one misses, was not meant to hit him; and what hits him, was never to miss him. At-Tabaraani reported the narration with the following wording: "Remember Him (Allaah) in prosperity and He will be for you during adversities. Be sure that whatever you miss, was not meant to hit you; and what hits you, was never to miss you… Remember that the Help of Allaah is obtained with patience, relief emerges after distress, prosperity follows adversity, and hardship is followed by ease, and that the Predestination will come to pass."

Allaah Knows best.
