Blood donation to unknown people who might be criminals, drug addicts, etc
Fatwa No: 96396

Question

Asalamo alaikoum, We understand that donating blood may be considered permissable and even recommended by some to save the life of others. However, some blood banks that operate blood donation campaigns whether in a Muslim society or not (as in the Western world) often don't provide any information about who is receiving the donated blood other than someone who desperately needs it to survive or to stay healthy. This implies that the general population needing blood transfusion are not just Muslims and believers from the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) but also include: 1) Bhuddists and Hindus 2) Possibly athiests (don't believe in God) 3) Or even criminals and drug addicts who engaged in excessive alcohol drinking, illegal drug use or people who obtained serious sexually transmitted diseases that made it neccessary to require blood transfusions to stay alive or remain healthy, which sadly exist with very high numbers in many Western countries due to their open drinking and sexual habits. So is it still permissible to donate blood anonymously to save the life of someone who is unknown to us, cnnsidering that anonymous blood donation is often the main way to donate blood. Thanks and may Allah continue to bless you and this site for being a pillar of guidance on earth.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fatwa 83172 clarifying that it is permissible to donate blood for a non-Muslim whatever his religion is, as long as he is not fighting against the Muslims.

The possibility that the person to whom the blood is donated could be a fornicator or adulterer, or a person who consumes intoxicants, is not a religious obstacle from donating to him, as this is not directly helping him in doing those sins.

Allaah Knows best.
