Hundreds of Immigrants Cross into Melilla

A fresh wave of illegal immigrants has swept over the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

About 350 people made it across the fence in the early hours of Monday morning in spite of recent efforts to block off the crossing.

Following a similar breach last week the Spanish and Moroccan authorities mobilised nearly 2,000 extra police and soldiers to stand guard.

They also raised the razor-wire topped fence up to six metres. Those were measures Madrid believed would make a difference, effectively shutting off the European Union's only land borders with Africa.

However today's arrival of hundreds more immigrants calls that into question.

Welcome centres are said to be stretched to the limit with the latest influx, while local leaders in Melilla say the solution to the problem must come from their Moroccan counterparts.
