Hamas will not renew its fragile truce with
Khaled Meshaal was speaking at a rally in the al-Yarmuk quarter in
"We will not enter a new truce while our people are surrounded and are preparing for a new round of conflict," he said. "We have had enough of the truce while our prisoners are still held."
Meshaal's announcement came amid further violence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, as
"There's no question of agreeing a new truce and there's no
point in negotiating, because the policy of procrastinating over
applying agreements pushes us not to renew the truce," Meshaal said.
Palestinian groups agreed to the truce at a meeting in
March, but it has been far from convincing since then, with fighters retaliating for targeted assassinations of their leaders carried out by the Israeli military.
Addressing the gathering, which was attended by representatives of other Palestinian groups, including Islamic Jihad, Meshaal said: "The Palestinian gun will always be pointed only at the Zionist enemy and peace can only be achieved through the gun."
