An attack on a border patrol in China's northwestern Xinjiang region has left 16 policemen dead, Chinese state media says.
The Xinhua news agency said "rioters" tossed grenades into a border patrol station in the Kashi region on China's frontier with Central Asia on Monday.
Sixteen other policemen were injured in the attack in the Xinjiang city of Kashgar.
The report said the assailants drove a lorry inside the paramilitary police station before throwing two grenades.
Xinjiang, a vast area that borders Central Asia, has about 8.3 million Uighurs, and many are unhappy with what they say has been six decades of repressive Chinese rule.
