Israeli massive offensive in the Gaza Strip triggered the various campaigns of boycott across the world from Middle East to Latin America, including United States.
A group of American university professors has for the first time launched on Thursday a national campaign calling for an academic and cultural boycott of Israel, following the boycott of Canada's Ontario's university workers committee, reported Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.
Israel launched massive offensive in Gaza, killing more than 1300 Palestinians, a third of them children, and wounded at least 5300.
Israel targeted and destroyed hospitals, schools, mosques and also infrastructure system.
"As educators of conscience, we have been unable to stand by and watch in silence Israel's indiscriminate assault on the Gaza Strip and its educational institutions," the U.S. Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel stated.
The group called for punitive measures against Israel assault.
David Lloyd, a professor of English at the University of Southern California said that the campaign was founded by a group of 15 academics, mostly from California, but is currently expanding to create a network that embraces the United States as a whole.
Different kinds of boycott over Israeli assault on Gaza Strip have been staged in various countries.
Consumers Association of Turkey called on Turkish citizens to boycott Israeli products by saying "We will not provide ammunition for Zionist Israel's attacks."
Meanwhile, the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia in Malaysia also said consumers in the Southeast Asian country would not buy goods produced by U.S. toothpaste manufacturer Colgate-Palmolive Co, soft drink maker Coca-Cola and coffee chain Starbucks to protest U.S. inaction against the attacks.
Similar boycott in Canada
CUPE-Ontario, the provincial wing of the Canadian Union of Public Employees —Canada's largest union – released a press release on Jan. 2 announcing plans to bring a resolution to its annual conference supporting a ban on Israeli academics who speak, teach or research at Ontario universities.
On January 5, CUPE Ontario's university workers committee announced that it would "bring a resolution to its annual conference supporting a ban on Israeli academics doing speaking, teaching or research work at Ontario universities as a protest against the December 29 bombing of the Islamic University in Gaza."
CUPE Ontario President Sid Ryan also publicly called for a boycott of Israeli academics who refused to condemn Israel's recent military activities in Gaza, CUPE website said.
Canadian Union of Public Employees convention voted Saturday to support the campaign calling for sanctions and disinvestment from Israel until it recognizes a Palestinian right to self-determination.
The Ontario branch represents nearly half of the 450,000 union members across Canada in health care, education, social services, universities, transportation and other sectors.
Britain's largest college teachers' union voted Monday to consider boycotting Israeli academics over what members termed "apartheid" policies and discrimination against Palestinians.
Under the resolution approved by delegates, CUPE Ontario said it will develop an education campaign similar to one by the British Columbia CUPE chapter, which since 2000 has promoted a "solidarity campaign" with the Palestinians.
