A caller to Islam will not succeed in his call unless he is deliberate in all affairs and behavior. Authntic Hadeeths of the Prophet, , highlight this fact and confirm that he adopted deliberateness and verified all news. For instance:
1 - With Usamah ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him: Usaamah ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with said,
The Prophet sent us to Al-Huraqah [one of the families of the tribe] of Juhaynah. We reached these people in the morning and defeated them. A man from the Ansaar and I chased one of their men and when we attacked him, he said, “No one is truly worthy of worship but Allah.” The Ansaari refrained from killing him, but I stabbed him with my spear until I killed him. When we returned, this news reached the Prophet . He said to me: “O Usaamah! You killed him after he had said, ‘No one is truly worthy of worship but Allah?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! He said so in order to save his life.” The Prophet said: “You killed him after he had said, ‘No one is truly worthy of worship but Allah?’” The Prophet kept on repeating this until I wished I had not embraced Islam until that day.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
In another narration, Usaamah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! He said so out of fear of the sword.’ The Prophet replied: ‘Have you probed his heart so that you would know if he meant it?’ The Prophet kept on repeating this until I wished this had been my first day as a Muslim.” [Muslim]
In another narration, the Prophet, , said to him: “What will you do about [his statement]: ‘No one is truly worthy of worship except Allah’ on the Day of Resurrection?” Usaamah said:“Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me [from Allah]!” The Prophet, , said: “What will you do about [his statement]: ‘No one is truly worthy of worship except Allah’ on the Day of Resurrection?” He added nothing to this (sentence) but simply continued to say: “What will you do about [his statement], ‘No one is truly worthy of worship except Allah’ on the Day of Resurrection?” [Muslim]
In this manner, the Prophet, , was the most deliberate and keenest to verify information. He would not fight the disbelievers until he was absolutely sure that they did not perform the rituals of Islam. It was narrated on the authority of Anas ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, that, “When the Prophet would come to invade a people, he would not order us to go forth until the morning. He would wait and see if he heard them calling the Athaan, and if he did, he would leave them alone. Otherwise, he would invade.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
2- Before Fighting:
The Prophet, , taught and trained his Companions on adopting deliberateness and verifying information on their course of calling to Allah The Almighty. For example, the Prophet, , would order the commander he dispatched to a brigade to give the enemy three options before fighting:
A -To embrace Islam and migrate, or to embrace Islam without migrating and be like the Muslim Bedouins.
B -If they refuse to enter Islam, they should be invited to pay Jizyah [a tax for non-Muslims living in an Islamic state].
C –If they refuse to accept either of these choices, the [Muslim] commander should seek the Help of Allah The Almighty and fight them. [Muslim]
3- In Prayer:
Another example that shows how the Prophet, , would teach his Companions to be deliberate and not hasty appeared in his saying: “When the Iqaamah [immediate call] for prayer is pronounced, do not rush to it and walk calmly to join the congregational prayer. What you catch up, perform, and what you miss, complete.”' [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Also, the Prophet, , said: “When the Iqaamah for prayer is pronounced, do not stand for it until you see me come out.” [Muslim]
Allah The Almighty loves the quality of being deliberate owing to its high virtue. The Prophet, , said to Al-Ashajj, may Allah be pleased with him: “You possess two qualities that Allah loves: clemency and deliberateness.” [Muslim] The messengers of Allah, may Allah exalt their mention, were the cream of all people and are their role models. The most perfect of them in possessing deliberateness and clemency was Prophet Muhammad, , as he took the greatest share of these qualities.
4- In Battles:
It was narrated on the authority of Anas ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said,
The Messenger of Allah would attack the enemy at the break of Dawn. He would listen carefully to hear the Athaan [first call to prayer]. If he heard an Athaan [being called], he would stop; otherwise, he would launch the attack. Once, upon hearing a man saying in the Athaan, “Allah Is the Greatest, Allah Is the Greatest,” the Messenger of Allah remarked: “He is following Al-Fitrah [Islam - man’s innate disposition].” Then, upon hearing him saying: “I testify that none is truly worthy of worship but Allah, I testify that none is truly worthy of worship but Allah.” The Prophet said: “You are now saved from Hell.” [Muslim]
It was also narrated on the authority of Anas ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, that, “When the Prophet would come to invade a people, he would not order us to go forth until the morning. He would wait and see if he heard them calling the Athaan, and if he did, he would leave them alone. Otherwise, he would invade.” [Al-Bukhari]
It was narrated on the authority of Abdullaah ibn Sarjis Al-Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, , said: “Good appearance, deliberateness and moderation constitute one of twenty-four parts of Prophethood." [At-Tirmithi]
Therefore, deliberateness is praiseworthy and good, except in matters pertaining to the Hereafter, given that the criteria that Allah The Almighty ordained for that calls for hurriedness, which in this case is an act that Allah The Almighty loves.
