A- Safiyyah bint Abdul-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with her.
When Hamzah bin ‘Abd Al-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him, was martyred in Uhud, his sister Safiyyah came to see him after the polytheists mutilated his body, broke his nose, split open his stomach and cut off his ears and testicles. The Messenger of Allah 
told Az-Zubayr bin Al-’Awwaam, may Allah be pleased with him, to meet her and make her return so that she would not see what happened to her brother. Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him said to her, “O mother, the Prophet orders you to return.” She asked, “But why? It has already reached me that my brother has been mutilated, and it is in the cause of Allah. We are content with all of this, and I will seek the reward of Allah and will be patient – Allah willing.”

Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him said to her, “O mother, the Prophet orders you to return.” She asked, “But why? It has already reached me that my brother has been mutilated, and it is in the cause of Allah. We are content with all of this, and I will seek the reward of Allah and will be patient – Allah willing.”When Az-Zubayr bin Al-'Awwaam, may Allah be pleased with him, returned and informed the Prophet of what she said, he ordered Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, to leave her. So she came and looked at her brother, offered his funeral prayer and then said, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return,” and asked for the forgiveness of Allah for him.

After the Messenger of Allah buried his Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, he mounted his horse and returned to Madeenah with the rest of the Muslims. On his way, Hamnah bint Jahsh, may Allah be pleased with her, met him and so he told her to hope for Allah’s reward (for losing a member of her family). When she asked him who has died, he announced the death of her brother — ‘Abdullaah bin Jahsh, may Allah be pleased with him. She said, “To Allah we belong and to Him we will certainly return. I ask forgiveness of Allah for him. May he be blessed for attaining martyrdom!”

May he be blessed for attaining martyrdom!”For the third time, the Messenger of Allah told her to hope for Allah’s reward for losing a member of her family, so she asked who it was. Thereupon, he announced the death of her husband, Mus‘ab bin ‘Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him. Upon hearing the news she shouted and wailed. Seeing her doing so, the Messenger of Allah said: “The woman’s husband is extremely dear to her.” He said so because she was firm upon hearing the news of the death of her brother and maternal uncle, but screamed upon hearing the death of her husband. The Prophet then asked her why she screamed and wailed, she replied, “O Messenger of Allah, I remembered that his children have become orphans, and so that terrified me.” Upon that, the Prophet supplicated to Allah for her and that Allah The Almighty would compensate her children well. As a result, she married Talhah bin ‘Ubaydillaah, may Allah be pleased with him, for whom she bore Muhammad and ‘Imraan, and Talhah turned out to be the closest person to her children.

Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqaas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The Messenger of Allah passed by a woman from Banu Dinaar whose husband, father and brother were all killed in Uhud. When their death was announced to her, she simply asked, ‘And how is the Messenger of Allah?’ People said, ‘Well, O mother of so, praise be to Allah, he is well and as good as you desire.’ She said, ‘Let me see him.’ They pointed to him. Upon seeing him she said, ‘All misfortunes are nothing so long as you are safe.’” This is the effect of faith when it touches the heart of a Muslim.

Kabshah bint ‘Ubayd Al-Khazrajiyyah, the mother of Sa‘d bin Mu‘aath, may Allah be pleased with him and her, came running towards the Prophet while he was next to his horse. At that time her son Sa‘d bin Mu‘aath, may Allah be pleased with him, was holding the rein of the horse of the Prophet . Seeing his mother, he said to the Prophet “O Messenger of Allah, it is my mother.” The Prophet said, “She is welcome.”

Seeing his mother, he said to the Prophet “O Messenger of Allah, it is my mother.” The Prophet said, “She is welcome.”When she drew near, she gazed at the Prophet and then said, “Now that I have seen that you are safe, my misfortune will certainly be trivial.” He consoled her for the death of her son, ‘Amr bin Mu‘aath, may Allah be pleased with him, who had been killed, and then said: “O Mother of Sa‘d, bear glad tidings and convey glad tidings to their kindred that all their people killed in the battle are companions in Paradise, and that they are twelve and they are intercessors for all their kinsfolk.” She replied, “O Messenger of Allah, we are satisfied. Who would cry over them after [hearing] this?” Then she said, “O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah for those who are alive [from their families].” Thereupon, the Prophet said: “O Allah! Remove the sorrow from their hearts, and console them for their misfortune. Compensate those who are alive [of their families] with what is better than what they have lost.”
