Allah The Almighty chose certain people to be the Companions of the Prophet because He knew that they had the purest hearts and that they were the best of humanity after the Prophets and Messengers.
Allah The Almighty chose them to be in his company, support him and convey the message that he came with during his lifetime and after his demise. It was they who shouldered the responsibility of conveying the religion of Allah The Almighty after the demise of Muhammad and spread it in every land that they could physically reach.
The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, were beacons of knowledge and forerunners and pioneers in all aspects: in piety, fearfulness of Allah, sincerity and sacrifice. These qualities entitled them to attain the pleasure of Allah The Almighty.
There was no commendable quality in which they were not leading examples and masters. Indeed, they took knowledge from its pure source and thus, they were able to win over the hearts of people due to their sense of justice and faith. They conquered the land by sacrificing their souls for the sake of Allah The Almighty in the battlefields.
The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, conveyed all that they had learnt from the niche of Prophethood and passed down their noble qualities to the generation that came after them. Their narrations were transmitted through a chain that came directly from the Prophet who conveyed and received it from angel Jibreel (Gabriel), may Allah exalt his mention, who conveyed from Allah The Almighty. They conveyed what they learnt and informed the following generation that it came from Muhammad and that Allah The Almighty obliged them to convey it to those who came after them, and that it is an obligation for those who receive it to convey it to those who come after them and so on.
In His Book, Allah The Almighty praised the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, who believed in His message and followed in the footsteps of His Messenger . He testified that the Muhaajiroon (the Companions who migrated from Makkah to Madeenah) and the Ansaar (the residents of Madeenah who supported the Prophet ) had reached the highest level of faith.
Allah The Almighty Says (what means):
· "And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhaajireen and the Ansaar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment." [Quran 9:100]
· "And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you." [Quran 2:143]
· "But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good, and it is those who are the successful" [Quran 9:88]
There are many more verses that address this issue and the reward awaiting the Companions in the Hereafter and the high status they hold in Islam.
Moreover, the Prophet praised them and gave some of them glad tidings of being among the dwellers of Paradise. They gained this rank through their devotion and commitment to Islam and their righteous deeds and sacrifices for the sake of the religion.
Due to these noble qualities and honorable manners, the Prophet assigned people from amongst them to serve in different posts and shoulder various responsibilities, as ministers, scribes, servants, deputies, commanders and so on. They set examples of wisdom and intelligence and performed their tasks in the best manner and fulfilled their duties perfectly.
There are different reasons why these great Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, are mentioned, such as:
· To clarify the greatness of our Prophet who raised this great generation and cultivated them and was the reason their lives and hearts changed.
· To know how close the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, were to the Prophet .
· To become aware of the roles and posts they held.
· To realize the wisdom in the manner in which our Prophet utilized the resources he had around him.
