An attacker drove a car packed with explosives to the main gate of the legislature in the volatile province and detonated them, blowing himself up as several other Resistance men entered the building, throwing grenades.
Witnesses reported shootings and explosions inside the complex during the incident, which began at 2 p.m. (4:30 a.m. EDT) and ended at 9:30 p.m. (noon EDT).
Most of the officials and people inside were rescued by Indian paramilitaries and police, who retrieved the bodies of two attackers as they searched the complex.
The attack was the latest in years of violence in Kashmir, where Resistance have been fighting Indian rule.
India condemned the attack as a ``barbaric act of terrorism'' and accused Pakistan of aiding and abetting its perpetrators.
Monday's attack was claimed by a Pakistan-based militant group, Jaish-e-Mohammad (Army of Mohammad). The group was launched by Pakistani religious leader Moulana Masood Azhar after he was freed by Indian authorities in exchange for passengers of an Indian Airlines plane hijacked to Afghanistan in 1999.PHOTO CAPTION:
