Militant attack in Jordan leaves 4 security men dead

Four security personnel were killed in Jordan’s southern Al-Karak province on Tuesday in a gunfight with militants, Jordan’s Petra news agency quoted an official security source as saying.

According to the security source, the gunfight erupted as Jordanian security forces were conducting raids in the area in hopes of finding wanted militants.

Earlier Tuesday, a Jordanian security source told Anadolu Agency that militants had opened fire on security personnel as they carried out a raid in the province.

The incident comes only two days after 14 people were killed in a similar shootout -- also in Al-Karak -- between militants and security forces.

According to Jordanian officials, casualties of Sunday’s gunfight included seven security personnel, two passersby, a Canadian tourist and four attackers.

On Tuesday morning, the ISIL claimed responsibility for Sunday’s shooting attack.

In a statement published on its official Telegram account, the group identified the four slain attackers as Mohamed al-Khatib, Yusuf al-Qarwane, Hazem Abu Rumman and Mohamed Abu Rumman.
