US Soldier Killed, Iraqi Shiite Leader Opposes Resistance against Occupation
A U.S. soldier was shot in the head while buying digital video discs at a shop in Baghdad on Friday, the shop owner and other witnesses said. The shop owner said the soldier had come into the DVD shop in the Kazimiyah neighborhood in the northwest of the city at around 11 a.m. and picked up two discs. "He took out dollars from his pocket and as I looked at the money I heard a bang. He froze and then fell backwards," the owner told Reuters Television. "Two other soldiers came in, picked him up and took him away." Other witnesses corroborated the owner's version. One said he saw a young man shooting the soldier at close quarters in the lower head. Another soldier was killed as troops patroled with Iraqi police near the Iraqi Shiite city of Najaf, around 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of Baghdad Thursday night, Marine Major Rick Hall told AFP. They were attacked by gunmen as they "were conducting a motorised patrol, and the exact circumstances are still under investigation," Hall said. "It is really unusual because the situation between Najaf and Kufah is usually quiet," Hall said. The death brings to 57 the number of US troops killed since President George W. Bush declared the war in Iraq effectively over on May 1, according to an AFP count from US military statements. Nineteen of those were killed in attacks and the rest in accidents. **2 US Soldiers still Missing, Probably Abducted*** Meanwhile, US military intelligence believes Fedayeen militia abducted two US soldiers with their Humvee light armoured vehicle in the town of Balad for use in attacks on US troops in Iraq, an army officer said Friday. "They believe Fedayeen were using it, trying to get close to Americans with the vehicle to probably conduct another terrorist attack against them," said Major Robert Twinner. "The last time they spotted the vehicle was in Baghdad," he said. The two soldiers were believed to have gone missing Wednesday in a remote location around 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Balad, he added. "We have no status on the soldiers at this time, we haven't found them but we will find them," he insisted, adding that they were from the 3rd Infantry Division and not the 4th Division as previously reported. **Leader of Iraqi Shiite Group Opposes Resistance against Coalition*** The leader of a key Iraqi Shiite movement said he opposed violence against the governing US-led coalition following a spate of attacks against US and British troops in largely Shiite areas, saying he preferred peaceful means to bring about an end to the occupation. "The use of violence is the last resort," Ayatollah Mohammed Baqer al-Hakim, head of the Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, said during his Friday sermon in the holy city of Najaf. "We must start by negotiations and peaceful demonstrations against the occupation." **PHOTO CAPTION*** An Iraqi celebrates the attack of a military truck convoy by hitting the destroyed vehicle with his sandal, Thursday, June 26, 2003 at the Youssefiyah area south of Baghdad, Iraq.
