Palestinians Take Charge in Gaza, Four Killed in Tel Aviv Building Collapse
Israeli troops withdrew from part of the Gaza Strip after leading Palestinian groups declared a limited cease-fire, boosting chances for a peace plan. Early Monday, Palestinian security forces took control of Beit Hanoun, setting up three checkpoints inside and controlling the entrance and exit to the northern Gaza town. Witnesses said departing Israeli troops had destroyed dozens of buildings, thousands of orange trees and three miles of road connecting the town with Gaza City. "The Israelis have destroyed everything, they have uprooted trees, destroyed houses and the road but they did not succeed in destroying our determination to live here," said Mohammed Shabat, 65, a Beit Hanoun resident. On Sunday, the Islamic Jihad and Hamas groups called a three-month cease-fire, and the mainstream Fatah followed with a six-month truce declaration. The cease-fire declarations apply to settlers and soldiers in the West Bank and Gaza as well as to Israel, a key Israeli demand. Israel was not a party to the truce and refused to guarantee that it would stop military operations against Palestinian activists, while demanding that the groups declaring the truce be dismantled and disarmed. The Palestinian statements, meanwhile, were couched in terms that clearly laid the blame for the violence on Israel, demanding that Israel stop attacks, lift roadblocks and release prisoners. The United States offered qualified support. **Four Killed in Tel Aviv Building Collapse*** A two-story building collapsed Monday morning in Tel Aviv, killing at least four people, including a five year-old girl, and trapping others in the ruins, rescue workers said. The building fell after a gas canister apparently exploded, said Moshe Mosco, a spokesman for the fire and rescue service. Three people were injured and at least three others were trapped in the building, the army and rescue workers said. "The building has totally collapsed," Mosco said. "We have pulled out five people so far. One was dead and another died on the way to hospital." Later rescue workers pulled out two more bodies from the ruins. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Israeli rescue forces work on the ruins of a two story building in Tel Aviv, Monday June 30, 2003.
