Hundreds Homeless after Siberian Earthquake
A tremor measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has left an estimated 1,800 people to fend for themselves in the open air in southern Siberia. The quake hit a sparsely populated and mountainous region to the south of Novosibirsk. A key north-south road has reportedly been cut, making access for emergency services difficult. Those in the stricken region have complained that Moscow has been slow to respond. Many were terrified by the tremors. "I was in the kitchen and the cooker started shaking," said one woman. "Then a gap opened up in the floor. It was like something you'd see in a film." More than 140 aftershocks have been reported. The quake follows last Saturday's earth tremor near the Chinese-Kazakh border and another in Japan on Friday. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Altai Republic, Russia.
